-
- announcing: NAUGC '91
-
- the National Apple Users Group Conference
-
- Friday through Sunday
- Jun 7-9, 1991
-
- at the University of California at Berkeley
-
- NAUGC Background:
-
- NAUGC is the National Apple Users Group Conference, a 3-day gathering of
- Macintosh and Apple II UG leaders held annually. Groups gather to talk about
- user group management and operation issues, industry topics, building vendor
- relationships, and user-advocacy issues.
-
- While NAUGC is primarily intended for the Apple II- and Macintosh- users
- groups, it is by no means exclusive. Anybody involved in running or starting a
- users group for any type of computer or group of users is invited, and can
- most likely benefit from most of the sessions. Attendees will include
- corporate, educational, and community user group representatives.
- Traditionally around 500 people attend.
-
- About this year’s NAUGC:
-
- NAUGC '91 is being organized by Raines Cohen, a user group activist for over
- twelve years. Cohen was an active volunteer in the New England Apple Tree
- (N.E.A.T.), and is an honorary activist with the Boston Computer Society. He
- co-founded the BCS Macintosh SIG and BMUG (originally the Berkeley Macintosh
- Users Group) in 1984; he serves on the board of directors of the latter, and
- was chair of the board for two years. He has experience with small groups as
- well; after co-founding Newton Apple Kids in 1980, it grew to 100 members over
- three years.
-
- NAUGC91 Inc., the conference organizer, is not formally affiliated with or
- sponsored by any of the above-listed organizations, but attendees and
- volunteers are expected from most of them. Cohen is providing initial funding
- for the event; sponsorships by Apple and other vendors are expected to cover
- most expenses, with attendance fees and miscellaneous sales making up the
- rest.
-
- Traditionally, NAUGC takes place on a Friday-Sunday in mid-Spring in the
- midwest, at a hotel. This year, however, it will be held in campus facilities
- at the University of California at Berkeley (near San Francisco), from
- Friday-Sunday, June 7-9, 1991. The use of University dorms and classrooms
- should help make the conference more affordable for the attendees, many of
- whom are paying their own way to attend the conference. 2-to-a-room
- accomodations will be encouraged to help reduce costs and meet other UG
- leaders.
-
- Content of the conference:
-
- The theme of NAUGC91 is "Raising the standards". The idea is to focus on
- getting past the "survival" stage and working on operating more effectively to
- serve members and communities. We want to help groups avoid reinventing the
- wheel in their management, planning, and activities. Sessions will include:
-
- > A keynote address from an industry leader.
- > After-hours discussions with industry notables.
- > Sessions lead by user group leaders.
- > Discussion groups.
- > Tutorials on forming a group, obtaining non-profit status, affiliating with
- other groups, setting up bulletin board systems.
- > Extensive System 7.0 discussion.
-
- How to attend:
-
- The exact rates for accomodations and attendance at NAUGC '91 have not yet
- been set as of this writing, although admission should be in the same range as
- in the past - $30-70 (meals included) per person to attend; we expect dorm
- accomodations to cost far less than nearby hotels. Interested parties can
- write to:
-
- NAUGC '91, 1442A Walnut St., Suite 341, Berkeley, CA 94709.
-
- Phone: (415) 215-9550 Fax: (415) 849-9026
-
- AppleLink: NAUGC
-
- Rates will escalate as the event approaches, with the lowest admission price
- offered during the month of April. Join early to get the best deal! There is a
- registration cap that we cannot exceed, so sign up early to hold your place!
-
- NAUGC '91 will need a great deal of assistance from the user group community
- to succeed. In particular, it needs:
-
- > Volunteers. Both local people and helpers all over the world, to spread the
- word and help organize the event.
-
- > Sponsors. Interested vendors should write to the above address to obtain
- information about sponsorship opportunities, including program book
- advertising, exhibiting, meal sponsorships, scholarships, and focus groups.
- User group leaders represent the key influencers from a wide spectrum of the
- market. These people are the ones advising others what to buy in business,
- education, and the community. Make sure they know what your company and your
- products are all about.
-
- Apple computer has already committed to be a major-event sponsor of NAUGC '91;
- the number of opportunities is strictly limited, and slots will be allocated
- on a first-come-first-served basis. Call (415) 215-9550 to find out.
-
- > Ideas. What should user groups be doing? How should they do it? For
- interested parties unable to attend, the program book and other publications
- will include papers submitted prior to the conference. The papers deadline is
- May 1, 1991.
-
- With your help, NAUGC ‘91 can be a tremendously successful conference, for the
- attendees, the industry, an the entire user group community. We hope to see
- you there!
